Fish for Sale: A History of Commercial Fishing on Great Slave Lake
About
Fish for Sale: A History of Commercial Fishing on Great Slave Lake
As a reliable, year-round source of food, fish have always been a staple for the Indigenous people who call the Big Lake home. The introduction of a commercial fishery in the late 1940’s increased the harvest of the lake’s fish, allowing for sale to local markets and export around the world. Today, the important traditions of harvesting and preserving fish continue to be kept alive by Indigenous communities and commercial fishers around Great Slave Lake.
The exhibit is a partnership with Hay River Heritage Centre and can be visited beginning September 28, 2025, from 10am to 5pm, Tuesdays to Sundays.
