PWNHC celebrates 197th anniversary of the birth of hockey
About
Join the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre (PWNHC), Homebase, and Communities Building Youth Futures (CBYF) for an afternoon of hockey to celebrate the first recorded hockey game in North America in Délı̨nę, NWT on October 20, 1825.
In 1825, Sir John Franklin noted that as his men settled into their winter quarters on the shores of Great Bear Lake, they passed the time by skating and playing hockey. Local Dene oral history also speaks of people “flying around” and playing on the ice.
Opening ceremonies will begin at 1 pm in the PWNHC’s parking lot, followed by indoor and outdoor activities such as table-top and shinny hockey tournaments, prizes, and hockey history! Open to all ages.
Snacks and sticks provided.
