Port Radium is on the eastern shore of Great Bear Lake. It is a the site of Canada's first uranium mine that opened in the 1930s. Uranium from this mine was used to make the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan at the end of World War II. The mine operators did not tell the local Sahtu Dene the hazards of uranium so many of the workers became very sick as they worked without proper protective equipment. Long ago a Sahtu elder had a prophecy that strange people with white skin would dig into the mountain, extract a long material that they would make something out of. This would then be dropped on people by a large bird and kill everyone below.
