Interwoven
Cathie Harper has yet to find a material she can’t weave with – dogwood, cedar, birch bark, yarn, hemp, wire and more – her materials stash is a treasure trove of possibility. Her baskets and non-traditional woven creations use both natural and commercial materials, are often interwoven with a tale or two as well.
When Cathie begins a basket, she starts with the collection, soaking, and drying of the perfect wild materials. She may have a general concept of the style and shape but enjoys the freedom of spontaneous creation. She lets the materials speak to her and never really knows where a piece will end as she experiments with weaving techniques, textures, and addition of unconventional materials. She lets the materials speak to her and never really knows where a piece will end up.
