Archaeological Impact Assessment at Quarry at KM 384 of Highway 1

Glen MacKay (NWT Archaeologist’s Permit 2015-010)

Under NWT Archaeologist Permit 2015-010, Glen MacKay of the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre (PWNHC), assisted by Rene O’Reilly, a PWNHC summer student, conducted an archaeological impact assessment (AIA) of a proposed quarry at KM 384 of Highway 1 on July 8, 2015. The Department of Transportation will quarry limestone bedrock at this location for use in highway maintenance.

The AIA consisted of foot traverses of the quarry area. The quarry area consisted of flat, featureless terrain with little potential for archaeological sites. No archaeological sites were found in conflict with the proposed quarry development.
