In 2015, 38 new place names for the Trout Lake area were approved and made official under the NWT Geographic and Community Names Policy. Earlier, the Sambaa K’e Dene Band of Trout Lake had submitted a list of traditional Slavey names for geographical locations in their traditional land use area. These names link the community members to their traditional lands through histories, legends and descriptions of the location.
