High Resolution Photo Gallery Instructions
Finding Images:
The photos in the gallery are broken down by subject categories.
On the main page for the galleries you will find a set of seven main headings. By clicking on one of those headings you will find either web pages with “thumbnail” versions of images, or a menu that breaks the subject area down into more detail. Click on menu items to take you to images.
Here are two examples of how to find images:
1. If you are looking for pictures of a specific community, such as Deline, click on the header “Communities”. This will bring up a list of communities. Click on Deline, and you will see web pages with thumbnail photos of Deline and captions containing whatever date and identification information we have.
2. If you are looking for pictures of a subject such as river tugboats, click on the “Business and Economy” header. That will take you to a subject list that includes “Transportation ”. One of the subheadings under “Transportation” is “Marine Transportation”. Clicking on that item will bring up a set of web pages with thumbnail photos of a variety of vessels as well as people and activities associated with the subject.
The photos are organized into subject categories based on the Archives’ experience with the needs of students and educators.
There are eight main subject headings. Most of those are broken down to more specific subjects that are accessed via drop-down menus. This explains the main headings:
Arts: Covers traditional aboriginal arts such as beadwork and carving as well as subjects such as painting and music.
Business and Economy: A wide variety of subjects related to the wage economy, such as various types of transportation, mining, and trading.
Communities : Includes a broad assortment of subjects such as general views of communities, specific structures, people and activities.
Government: People, activities and facilities related to all levels of government, including treaties.
Nature: Plants, animals and landscape features of the NWT. Note that the NWT Archives mandate is mainly human history, so the selection and quality of images in this section is limited.
Special Themes: Themes that have been of special interest to our clients. These include missions and VIP visits.
Sports and Recreation: Both traditional aboriginal sports and others. Also includes sports hunting and fishing.
Traditional Life: This is where photos relating to the traditional ways of aboriginal people in the NWT are to be found. Activities such as hunting, fishing and trapping are represented as well as life on the land in general. There are also images of traditional visual arts and musical performances.
How to view, download and print large images in the gallery:
Viewing and downloading large images:
1. Click on the thumbnail photo of the image you wish to download. This will bring up a window with only a large version of the image.
2. To download the image, right click on it. Your web browser will then offer you options for saving the picture.
3. Choose where you want the image saved, do not re-name it, then save.
To return to the thumbnail page after saving or viewing the large image, click “Back” on your Web browser.
Note that the downloadable image files are quite large, generally between one-half and one and one half megabytes. On slower internet connections they may take some time to download.
How to print the high resolution images:
Once the image is saved on your computer it can be opened and printed in any basic image editing program, including the “Imaging” program available in Microsoft Windows Accessories, accessible through the Start Menu.
Printing small versions of the images:
The thumbnail images in the gallery can be printed directly from your Web browser. Simply right click on the image, which will bring up a menu that includes “Print”.
This will probably not work well for the large versions of the images due to technical limitations of Web browsers.
Saving information about the images:
You can save image captions by printing the thumbnail web pages or by copying and pasting the appropriate text into a word processor.
Advanced users should note that captions and credit information are embedded in the large files in IPTC format.
Photo credits are displayed with the thumbnail versions of the photos. They consist of the name of the donor of the photos or the photographer/NWT Archives.
For example: Busse/NWT Archives
Note that some credits are partially cut off on the web pages due to limitations of the software used to produce them.
It is also a good idea to show the Archives’ catalogue number with the photo. This makes it much easier to get additional copies of the image. The catalog number is the same as the image file name, and is displayed with the thumbnails. Catalogue numbers look like this:
N-1979-050-0321
