NWT Archives Client Services

Reference Services

We will respond to written and telephone requests about resources and services. Staff will also undertake limited research in response to specific inquiries and will advise patrons of the availability and suitability of appropriate collections. Inquiries will be processed in the order in which they are received.  Please make your reference request as specific as possible. For help searching online resources check here

A copy of our Reading Room Policies is available here.

Reproduction Services

The NWT Archives may not be the holder of copyright or intellectual property in the images and the client accepts full responsibility for obtaining permission from the copyright owner.

The NWT Archives will, where possible, endeavour to provide information about copyright to the client. All responsibility for possible infringement of copyright or other rights, including the invasion of privacy arising from use of reproductions is assumed by the user.

Anything other than personal or research use of NWT Archives items requires written permission and payment of usage fees.

If a record has been altered, an accompanying caption must indicate that the record has been altered and how it has been altered. For ordering instructions check here.

Copying of Archival Material

To ensure proper citation and to facilitate relocation of an item, the source of the material and its reference number must always accompany the copy. Archives staff can provide guidance.

Photocopying

A photocopier is available in the reading room to make copies of our holdings.  For preservation reasons, some archival documents and rare books can only be copied by NWT Archives staff or not at all.  The price for photocopying is $.25 per page

Use of digital devices

Cameras may be used in the research facilities to obtain copies of the collection material for reference purposes only. Users must not stand on tables or chairs or place collection material on the floor to capture an image. Users must not place tripods directly on documents, or obstruct aisles in the research facilities with photographic equipment, especially tripods. Any camera or other recording device that is unsuitable for use because of its potential negative effect on preservation is not permitted. The NWT Archives reserves the right to refuse the use of any device. When in doubt please consult with Archives staff.

Training

We offer training to community groups on all aspects of the acquisition, arrangement and description and preservation of archival material.
