Record Schedules - NWT Archives

Records Retention and Disposition Schedules
By Department

The Northwest Territories Archives Act is the basis of an accountability framework for the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT). The records created and used by the GNWT are evidence of policies, decisions and actions. GNWT Departments are required to ensure that records needed for accountability are retained in the short term. The NWT Archives has the added responsibility of identifying, acquiring , persevering and make accessible records that document the long term accountability of government.

The disposition of government records must be an orderly, transparent and routine administrative process. This is achieved by Record Disposition Authorities (sometimes refer to as record schedules) that provide details about records that departments create and how they are to be disposed of, either through destruction or transfer to archives. Record Disposition Authorities must be approved by the Territorial Archivist.

IMPORTANT- The schedules listed here are provided for the advice of the public and may not be up to date or accurate. For an official copy of any record disposition schedule contact the office of the Territorial Archivist, or the Records Management Unit of the Department of Public Works and Services.
