Cultural Information and Resources


Aboriginal Canada Portal is a single window to Canadian Aboriginal on-line resources, contacts, information, and government programs and services.

Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) is the first national Aboriginal television network in the world with programming by, for and about Aboriginal peoples to share with all Canadians.

Access (formerly Cancopy) licenses literature for photocopying purposes and reimburses writers for that use. It also handles electronic rights.

CBC National Arts News and ArtsCanada information and features.

Canada's National History Society (1994) is devoted to helping Canadians celebrate their stories, and to brushing the dust off of Canadian history to reveal our true passion and drama.

Canadian Archival Resources on the Internet provides a comprehensive list of links to Canadian archives and associated resources on the Internet. These include links to individual repositories, multi-repository databases, archival listservs, archival associations, educational opportunities, and other related sites. Links are generally limited to archival repositories, but museums and library special collections departments have been included when they contain reference to non-published materials.

Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) is recognized as a pioneer in the conservation of cultural heritage, and is committed to preserving Canadian heritage and supporting conservation and heritage institutions in Canada by creating and disseminating conservation knowledge and providing expert services.

Canadian Cultural Observatory
The Canadian Cultural Observatory is an interactive hub for cultural policy and development professionals in Canada - including decision makers, researchers, planners and managers.
Connect with colleagues, share ideas, and stay informed of the issues, research, and policies that affect Canada’s cultural vitality.

Canadian Heritage is responsible for national policies and programs that promote Canadian content, foster cultural participation, active citizenship and participation in Canada's civic life, and strengthen connections among Canadians.

Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN) and Canadian museums work together to strengthen our collective ability to create, present and manage Canadian digital content. This collaboration has resulted in CHIN's internationally valued Web site for heritage professionals, and the highly successful VMC portal at virtualmuseum.ca.

Canadian Historical Association (1922)is a national organization dedicated to historical research and scholarship in all fields of history.

Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproductions (CIHM, 1978) was established to locate early printed Canadian materials (books, annuals, and periodicals), to preserve their content on microfilm, and to make the resulting collections available to libraries and archives in Canada and abroad.

Canadian Rural Partnership is an initiative led by the Government of Canada in partnership with other levels of government and non-governmental partners across the country. The Partnership works with citizens from rural, remote and northern Canada to improve their quality of life. In the NWT, territorial and federal departments and agencies are key partners.

Copyright Organizations These organizations work to reimburse writers for unpaid use of their writing, and to maintain the integrity of copyright.

CultureCanada.gc.ca is the Government of Canada's one-stop web access to government Culture, Heritage and Recreation services. The Department of Canadian Heritage is leading the development of the site, with the involvement of various partners. This site was launched with contributions from many federal jurisdictions. In the upcoming year more content will be added in with the involvement of other levels of government.

Department of National Defence Directorate of History and Heritage (DHH, 1996) mission is to develop Canadian Forces history, heritage, traditions, military honours, museum and music systems.

Heritage Canada Foundation (1973) is a national, membership-based organization and registered charity established to encourage the preservation and demonstration of the nationally significant historic, architectural, natural and scenic heritage of Canada.

Hill Strategies Research Inc. is a Canadian company specializing in arts and culture research. We aim to provide top-quality research, statistical analysis and report preparation for the large and growing arts sector.

Historica is a non-partisan registered charity whose role is to engage our young people in the fascinating stories that make our country unique. Historica works with all levels of government to help deliver the best possible Canadian history education to our young people and by providing or supporting programs and resources that encourage Canadian youth to explore their history at a community as well as at a national level.

International Council of Museums (ICOM,1946) is a professional non-governmental organization of UNESCO, dedicated to advancing the cause of museums throughout the world.

MASC: Connecting Artists and Learning
Provides information about artists, workshops, special events and classes for students in dance, drama, literary arts, music, and visual arts.

Métis National Council offers cultural and program
information for Métis people under 25 years of age.

Multicultural History Society of Ontario (1976) fosters awareness of the multicultural nature of Ontario’s and Canada’s history, by working with communities, schools, cultural agencies and institutions to preserve, record and make accessible archival and other material which demonstrate the role of immigration and ethnicity in shaping the culture and economic growth of Ontario and Canada.

National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation is a nationally registered charitable organization created in 1985 by Mohawk conductor and composer John Kim Bell. Now entering its 19th year, the Foundation has fulfilled educational dreams for Aboriginal youth, placed the importance of education and the abilities of Aboriginal people into the forefront, and built an organization that is financially sound.

National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is a public agency created in 1939 that produces and distributes films and other audiovisual works which reflect Canada to Canadians and the rest of the world.

Native Journal has been publishing for over 15 years, celebrating the accomplishments of Aboriginal people and communities across Canada.

NWT Arctic Tourism promotes traditional arts and crafts of the North, which reflect the people's values and way of life. Many art galleries and shops in the Northwest Territories offer a wide selection to choose from.

NWT Metis-Dene Development Fund provides financial services and business assistance services to Metis and Dene people of the Northwest Territories, in order to stimulate growth and development of aboriginal entrepreneurship.

Northwest Journal provides detailed, well documented and referenced information for Canadian fur trade era re-enactors, historic site interpreters, and educators.

Okanagan Cultural Corridor Visual and performing arts providers, art galleries, studios, museums,
festivals, agricultural and winery tours and free Okanagan Cultural Guide.

Online Guide to Writing in Canada has various sections of use to Canadian writers, or those exploring Canadian writing. Its main feature is an a-z authors listing including annotated links to online resources.

The Other Metis Site is dedicated to those individuals, communities, and Nations who want to assert their Metis identity and heritage as a living and valuable contribution to modern life.

Parks Canada's mandate: On behalf of the people of Canada, we protect and present nationally significant examples of Canada's natural and cultural heritage and foster public understanding, appreciation and enjoyment in ways that ensure their ecological and commemorative integrity for present and future generations.

Photographic Historical Society Of Canada (PHSC,1974) advances the knowledge of and interest in the history of photography, particularly of photography in Canada.

PreservationDirectory.com - the online resource for historic preservation, building restoration and cultural resource management in the United States & Canada.

The Public Lending Right (PLR) Commission, consisting of authors, librarians and publishers, was established in 1986 to reimburse writers for library use of their books.

RicePaper Online: Asian [arts] Canadian [culture]
As a supplement to the magazine presents information about a non-profit media group committed to providing diverse perspectives on Canadian culture through expressions of Asian Canadian visual and performing arts.

RCMP Musical Ride Provides information about the RCMP musical ride and horses, including
photos, tour schedule, historical background, riding equipment, and members. Also presents additional information on the RCMP.

Royal Heraldry Society of Canada and its branches encourage, educate and promote the art & science of heraldry. RHSC informs and provides guidance to Canadians in obtaining coat-armour.

Statistics Canada is the official source for Canadian social and economic statistics and products. Its goal is simple — to provide detailed content on practically every aspect of Canada at a single point of contact.

Urban Ink First Nations production company which produces aboriginal and multicultural works of theatre, writing and film, utilizing an approach
which combines story-telling, dance, music, video and multi-media.

Vancouver Asian Heritage Month Society
Calendar of events celebrating Asian heritage (music, dance, readings), artists' biographies, information about events for children and educators, links to Asian Heritage Month in other Canadian cities.

Youth in Motion (YIM) is a not-for-profit, national charitable organization focused on developing the employability and life skills of today's youth to prepare them effectively for success in life and work.
