NWT Cultural Organizations

Association franco-culturelle de Yellowknife a un mandat à promouvoir la diffusion de la culture canadienne-française et initier, encourager ou coopérer avec tout autre association, groupe ou personne qui poursuit le même but.

Aurora Arts Society (1999) promotes and supports the arts, culture and heritage in the City of Yellowknife and the North.

Aurora Ukrainian Dancers
The Aurora Ukrainian Dancers are a dance troupe located in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. The Aurora Ukrainian Dancers bring to the stage a wonderful blend of different Ukrainian Folk Dances from various regions of the Ukraine. Ukrainian folk dance is not only entertainment but it also relates to the life styles, customs and history of the Ukrainian people.

City of Yellowknife Art Collection annually purchases works by NWT artists for public appreciation.

City Of Yellowknife Heritage Committee promotes the preservation of Yellowknife's heritage, including community awareness generated by its annual Heritage Award, and publication of 'Yellowknife By Water' and ' Walking Tours of Yellowknife's Old Town' brochures.

Crazy Legs Contemporary Dance Company
This is the NWT's first modern dance company. The premiere performance in Yellowknife, May 2005 will showcase original dance choreography by northern choreographers and dancers Karen Johnson and Darha Phillpot.

Fort Simpson Historical Society (1985) partners with other community organizations on a variety of activities, including inventory of heritage sites and structures, historical walking tours, development of museum and archival collections, and cultural interpretive programs.

Gwich'in Social and Cultural Institute (1992) documents, preserves and promotes the practice of NWT Gwich'in culture, language, traditional knowledge and values.

Inuvialuit Cultural Resource Centre (1998)represents many of the 5,000 Inuvialuit people in the communities of Aklavik, Holman, Inuvik, Paulatuk, Sachs Harbour and Tuktoyaktuk.

Kole Crook Fiddle Association

NWT Literacy Council (1989) is a territorial organization that promotes and supports literacy in all the official languages of the NWT.

NWT Mining Heritage Society (2000) is dedicated to preserving and promoting the mining heritage of the Northwest Territories.

Norman Wells Historical Centre (1989) portrays the history of the construction of the Canol Pipeline, geology, bush aviation, Mackenzie riverboats and Sahtu Dene culture. The Centre hosts an annual arts exhibition and its Great Bear Gallery giftshop features traditional Dene craft items,and local artwork. E-mail:canol.trail@nt.sympatico.ca

North Slave Metis Alliance (1996) promotes and enhances the educational, economic, social and cultural development of its members in the North Slave Region.

Northern Arts and Cultural Centre (1984) supports community and professionally produced theatre, dance and music performances from the NWT and internationally. Its fully equipped 313 seat facility in Yellowknife is the only year-round venue for performing arts functions in the NWT.

Northern Life Museum (1972) houses one of the best collections of northern native and early white settlement material in Canada.

Status of Women Council of the N.W.T. works towards the equality of women in the NWT through advice to the Government of the NWT; research; public education; advocacy on behalf of women; and assistance to women's groups.

Strings Across the Sky (SATS - 1988)works with youth in the north, teaching them to fiddle.

Stuck in a Snowbank Theatre (1995) works with aboriginal and non-aboriginal actors, playwrights, directors, technicians and designers to bring the stories of the Canadian North to the local, territorial and national stage.

Wildcat Cafe - City of Yellowknife
The Wildcat is one of few very early buildings that is in good condition and is still used. Widely recognized as a major drawing card for Yellowknife's Old Town, the Cafe has been the subject of paintings, drawing and photographs. The Wildcat is significant as one of Yellowknife's best examples of living heritage, and officially recognized in 1992 when Yellowknife City Council designated it as a Heritage Site. Western Arctic Moving Pictures is a non-profit film/video co-op with a focus on artistically driven moving media. Its main goals are to make films, and to host workshops and special screenings of works.

Y.K. Actors Studio coordinates a variety of community theatre projects including musicals, school workshops, dinner theatre and seniors sing-alongs.

Yamozha Kue (Dene Cultural Institute, 1987) assists NWT Dene to protect and promote Dene culture, languages, spirituality, heritage, tradition and customs.

Yellowknife Guild of Arts & Crafts (1946) offers a wide variety of classes to the public and promotes arts and crafts in the community.

Yellowknife Photo Club members have a wide range of backgrounds and interests from the amateur to the professional who meet to share a common interest in photography. From film to digital, print to slide, colour to black and white everyone is welcomed.

Yellowknife Quilters (1989)is a progressive group of quilters who range from traditional quilters to fabric artists. The organization generates appreciation and enthusiasm in the fine art of quiltmaking; provides educational programs and current information about quilting; and holds meetings, lectures, classes and retreats for the education of members and the community.
